Folio. Contents : the first edition of Volume I of Andrea Pozzo's dissertation on perspective with 102 full page engraved plates and explanatory text in Latin and Italian. Binding : original full leather boards with gilt titles and motifs, and seven raised bands to the spine. Condition: front and rear covers detached with some loss of leather to the edges, bumped and worn, bottom quarter of the spine leather missing on the left hand side, gilt titles and motifs very faded. Blank endpapers missing. Pencil ownership inscription of Robert Hesketh to the reverse of the cover and a further ownership inscription in ink (deleted) on the first title page. Damp staining to the top and bottom outside corners of the first half of the book, extending about 50mm (2 inches) in either direction, sometimes just clipping the plates, and similarly affecting the bottom outside corner of the last third of the book. The second volume was published in 1700. |
