Pandora : angered by Prometheus’ trick by which he stole fire for his creation, man, Zeus caused Hephaestus to fashion Pandora out of clay. Athene breathed life into her, and the other gods endowed her with gifts (hence her name, which means ‘all gifts’). Hermes, however, gave her flattery and deceit. She was sent to Epimetheus (‘Afterthought’), who readily accepted her, but she brought a box with her from which issued, when opened, all the ills that have afflicted mankind ever since.
