Adelphi : a London theatre.

Bawn : The Colleen Bawn was a melodrama commemorating the murder of the sixteen year old Ellen Hanley by John Scanlan and Stephen Sullivan. Scanlan had married her, and then quickly tired of his wife. He therefore arranged with Sullivan to take her on a boat trip. Once at sea, they first shot her, then dumped her body into the ocean. They were both subsequently arrested and executed, after sensational trials, which had the added interest that Scanlon came from the ‘upper classes’. The play established a record, running for 278 consecutive performances.

Boucicault : Dion Boucicault : 38 of his plays were performed at the Adelphi between 1844 and 1890, including The Colleen Bawn.
